The Roulette Cocktail is a mixed drink from the 1920s, consisting of Calvados, rum and Swedish Punch.
40 ml Christian Drouin Blanche de Normandie 20 ml Revolte Swedish Punch 20 ml Revolte Rum
Preparation: Stirred.
Alternatively and currently preferred by us:
40 ml Destillerie Onsen Goldparmäne 20 ml Carlshamns Flaggpunsch 20 ml Eminente 3 Rum
Preparation: 3 ice cubes, stirred for 10 seconds (30 times).
The Roulette Cocktail probably first appeared in a book published in London in 1925, in “The Buckstone Book of Cocktails”. There it consists of two parts Calvados and one part Caloric Punch (an alternative name for Swedish Punch). Crosby Gaige calls it The Black Bomber in 1940.
In The Buckstone Book of Cocktails, there is also a slightly altered concoction of equal amounts of each of the same ingredients, and this mixture is called the Twelve Miles Out Cocktail. In more recent books this mixture is also called something else, Devil’s Leap, Murderer’s Cocktail, Plunger, Six Feet Under Cocktail, Yo Ho or Yo Ho Ho.
A mixture of five parts each of Calvados and Caloric Punch with two parts rum is what Trader Vic calls an Off Shore Cocktail.
Unfortunately, there is nothing more to report, as the sources are very poor, but that does not diminish the enjoyment of this drink.
