The Heidelberg Years: Further insights into Harry Johnson

Harry Johnson in Berlin.

The biography of Harry Johnson and his family has to be largely rewritten, as numerous previously unknown official documents paint a new picture. Read more about this at https://mixology.eu/harry-johnson-the-heidelberg-years/

Summarised briefly, these documents prove that Harry’s first marriage was to Bertha Paul. It was not she who went to Heidelberg with their children, but his second wife Franziska Püttner. She divorced him in 1913 and married the most important German theatre director of the time, Dr Alwin Kronacher. Franziska died in Hamburg in 1945.

Harry and Franziska’s daughter Sigrid did not live in the USA, but married the former Olympic athlete and Doctor of Philosophy Albert Wilhelm Jesinghaus in Leipzig in 1926. Both died in Hamburg in 1968.

Harry and Franziska’s son Herbert died in Manhattan in 1939. His body was transferred to Germany.

The official documents suggest that Harry was at times married to his three wives at the same time: Bertha in Manhattan; Franziska in Hoboken and later Heidelberg; Martha in Berlin.

For my English-speaking readers, please note: More questions have arisen and I amcontinuing to research. Once the research is complete, you’ll read everything in English translation on my blog. If you are very curious, I kindly ask you to translate the post on Mixology with https://www.deepl.com/translator, because all the important documents are quoted in it.

About

Hi, I'm Armin and in my spare time I want to promote bar culture as a blogger, freelance journalist and Bildungstrinker (you want to know what the latter is? Then check out "About us"). My focus is on researching the history of mixed drinks. If I have ever left out a source you know of, and you think it should be considered, I look forward to hearing about it from you to learn something new. English is not my first language, but I hope that the translated texts are easy to understand. If there is any incomprehensibility, please let me know so that I can improve it.
